Alice Dashe

Alice Dashe is one of the Fist Mesa's foremost potters. She learned the craft from her mother and all of her pottery is done in the traditional Hopi way. The Hopi's do not use a potters wheel; they wind long strings of clay to form the rough shape and then smooth the clay by hand or with simple tools. The clay is taken from secret places on the reservation known only to that potter and his or her family. They dig and prepare the clay laboriously by hand. This gives each potter his or her own distinct look as far as the color of the pot is concerned. They do not use kilns rather they cover their unbaked pottery in sheep dung - it must be sheep dung so that it burns at just the right temperature. Many a pot breaks during the firing process. Either it burns too hot or it cools too quickly. Next the potter puts on the distinct design using several traditional techniques. Alice's pottery is for sale on this website.
