Katsina Clan Kiva repair
Last spring, Leo, the Katsina Clan Kiva Chief, asked Mike if he and his outreach, could help repair a sacred kiva which was starting to leak and crumble on one wall. Mike of course was happy to do so. Through his contacts in the construction world, Mike has pulled together the materials and a half dozen or so people who are involved in the construction trade. The plan is to go down the end of April 2008 and bring in a back hoe and bobcat and remove the roof and one wall of the kiva. Then they will expand the kiva slightly and replace a majority of the roof. This if very tricky in as much as we want to maintain the integrity of the construction and traditional building style, yet use all the modern materials which will prevent future problems with water seepage.

| This is a potter showing her wares in Pearson, Mexico. Although she is Mexican, her pottery techniques were taken from the Paquime Indians which had their main headquarters near Casas Grandes in Chihuahau, Mexico. Most archeologists, and antthropologists believe that the Paquime Culture, which is now extinct, were related to the Hopis. Most of the Hopi Elders we talked to agree. | Mike and Leo, the Kiva master, inspect the damage to the Katchina clan kiva on the far western edge of Walapi. In the spring, Mike and the guys from his outreach will provide the materials and some of the expertise to expand and repair this kiva. The Hopi members of this kiva will provide most of the labor |
